I told myself I was a size 22, but that's because it was better than hearing that I was really a size 24.

When I took a new job in a new town, the only thing I knew was that I wanted more:  more energy, more passion, more life.  And I wanted less: less body, less crying in dressing rooms, less feeling trapped in a body that I couldn't do anything but despise.

There's an old saying that says, "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear." And mine did.  In the form of a friend, who I later learned was a Master Certified Personal trainer who had spent his whole adult life helping people

reach audacious goals.  What I never had the heart to tell him was that I believed I was too far gone to ever really achieve anything. I didn't have the courage to tell him that I was pretty sure there was a smiling, fit girl in me who was trying to claw her way out.

My first workout lasted 12 minutes, and I couldn't lift anything heavier than 8 pounds. I was certain I was dying, and more certain that if I wasn't, I'd never do that again.  But neither he, nor I would ever let me quit.  Five years later, it's still one decision to show up at a time.

I've lost 100 pounds, and I've kept it off.  Why? Because instead of doing things the quick way, I've done them the right way.  I've taught my body new habits that allow me to continue living my life, only stronger, healthier, and more free.  I've learned how food works in the body, and how to make the best choices in the worst circumstances. I've come to understand how stress and grief really affect the body-- often in very powerful ways that we can't always name.  I've come to value the idea that it was never really just weight loss that I wanted-- it was to feel like joyful at the prospect of waking up each morning in a body that is able to do whatever I want to do.

I've learned that what I really did, and what I strive to keep doing, is transform.  And I fell in love with the process.

It's not just that I believe what I teach.  I also believe IN what I teach, which is why I'm so passionate about sharing it.  It saved my life, after all.

These days, I teach my passion through a non-profit organization, U-turn America.  To find out more, please visit us at We're on social media too, and would love to connect with you!
